Steven Lee Mitchell

For Herndon Town Council

Steven was born and raised in Herndon where he attended Herndon Elementary, Middle, and High School. During that time, Steven participated in many of the extracurricular activities offered in the Town of Herndon and Fairfax County. Please find several of his favorite memories below:

  • Participating in the Herndon Homecoming Parade as his family volunteered their home to help build class floats for eleven years.
  • Playing on Herndon Optimist Club's first lacrosse team in 1997. In addition to lacrosse, Steven participated in Herndon Optimist Club's basketball, baseball, and football programs. He also wrestled on the Herndon Rattler's Wrestling Club.
  • The Northern Virginia Swim League was a summer staple as Steven found his love for the water at Hiddenbrook and Herndon Rec Pools. By high school, this led him to the Varsity swim team where he earned the honor of Captain for three years.
  • Attending his first Friday Night Live! concert in 1995 on the Town Green.
  • Re-starting the Rotary's Interact Club at Herndon High School in 2002.

"There is No 'I' in Town." - Steven Lee Mitchell

In addition to Steven (class of '03), his three older sisters ('96, '98', '00), parents ('69, '70), and grandmother ('46) all graduated from Herndon High School. Over the years, Steven experienced many enhancements to the town as it grew larger than the stories he had always heard from his family and friends. The few farms he recalled were gone, and neighborhoods were rapidly forming. The next thing he knew, there was a brand new Municipal Center and a beautiful Fortnightly Library in the reinvigorated downtown. Even though he was a child at the time, he remembers acknowledging how the town's growth was providing more opportunities to him than were available for his parents and grandparents.

Steven knows from a firsthand experience where the Town of Herndon is coming from during this time of pivotal growth opportunity. His lifelong relationship with the Town gives him a unique outlook on the present future and fuels his passion for the proper management of our downtown revitalization.
